CONTIGNANOLA STORIA ANTICA DEI BORGHI
We have very little information of the site and the area of Contignano in etruscan
and roman period.
The first historical records tell us that in 1028 the Count Ilderbrando IV Aldobrandeschis sold Contignano to Foscolo and Maiza and the following year they donated it to the monastery of S.Salvatore of Monte Amiata.
In 1210, with a bill, the Emperor Ottone IV confirmed the possession of the Abbey.
In 1293 for the first time was certified the existence of the church of Santa Maria in Campo, always as a dependency of the monastery. In 1303 Contignano was passed on to Peter Ranuccio of Pepone Farnese, who sides with the Orvietans in 1313, but in 1339 the Castle of Contignano submits to the municipality of Siena in exchange for their citizenship.
On 26th may 1335 the monks of St.Saviour in spite of not having possession of the castle, they did renew the Diploma of Ottone IV by the Emperor Charles IV.
In 1379 an armed clash took place in Contignano among the Bretons allied troops of the Farnese and Contignanesi who sided with the Sienese, and its proud inhabitants had the better of the glorious page of this small village.
On 6th august 1390 the Farnese sold Contignano to Cione Salimbeni for 5000 florins. On March 18th 1405 Cocco Salimbeni stipulates the peace with Siena placed before Contignano.
In December of 1409 Contignanesi threw out Cocco Salimbeni and, on December 7th, the Republic of Siena grants independence and economic benefits to the Castle.
On March 30, 1501, despite the pacts the Sienese sell the lands do Contignano, not the castle to Antonio Giordani Venafro that in 1515, after a dispute with Borghese Petrucci leaves Siena and its lands. In 1559 the state of Siena is absorbed by the Treaty of Cateau Cambresis to the Medici Grand Duchy.
In 1608. due to the grand-ducal law, 1777, and the suppression of common cause, the Grand Duke Ferdinand confirms the independence of Contignano belonging to the family Bandinelli.
On January 1778 the small village of Contignano together with that of Castelvecchio were placed under the jurisdiction of the neighboring town of Radicofani.
